Rebellion, protest, determination – Fribourg will resonate with the calls to resistance during the 28th edition of FIFF that will take place from 29 March to 5 April 2014. The best of international cinema over recent months appears to be focused on individuals who struggle. This notion of resistance will set the tone at FIFF, not only in the films that will be screened in the International Competition, but also in the Parallel Sections, as for example the retrospective of Iranian cinema, that will be taken over and completed after FIFF by the International Film Festival Edinburgh EIFF and – newly confirmed – by TIFF Cinematheque, an initiative of the Toronto International Film Festival.
The International Competition for feature films includes twelve works coming from Asia, Latin America, Africa and Eastern Europe that will compete for the Regard dor. By hosting over 126 films from 46 countries, FIFF sees itself as a haven for the authors, producers and distributors who take risks in challenging the standardisation of cinema. The Festival will open its doors on Saturday, 29 March, in the presence of Alain Berset, member of the Swiss Federal Council, with the screening of A Prayer for Rain, an Indian production, with the members of the film team in attendance. The Opening Film looks back on the chemical disaster in Bhopal in 1984 and resonates perfectly with the themes of catastrophe, crisis and resistance that run through FIFF 2014.
The Ecumenical Jury of SIGNIS and INTERFILM will award its prize, which is endowed by Bread for All and Action Carême with CHF 5'000 to a film in the official competition, The members are Joël Baumann (France), Dorothée Thévenaz Gygax (Switzerland), Alan Foale (United Kingdom) and the German director Il Kang,
